Mesothelioma: the peak of mortality would be reached

By studying the evolution of mortality following periods of maximum exposure to asbestos (1950-1975), several teams of researchers predicted in the late 1990s that in France the peak of male mortality from mesothelioma would be reached towards 2020-2030 with an annual number of deaths between 1,000 and 1,500.

"Based on current mortality and incidence data produced by the Inserm CepiDc and the National Mesothelioma Monitoring Programme (NSP), coordinated by the InVS, it appears that the peak in mesothelioma mortality may have already been reached in France in the early 2000s, with 600 to 800 annual deaths for men and 100 to 200 deaths for women. Mortality is reported to be decreasing and its rate could stabilize around 2030, at a lower level than had been predicted by previous work and equivalent to that in the late 1970s," the InVS said in a statement on 13 February. r 2013.

However, if mesothelioma mortality begins to decline, 18 to 25,000 deaths are still expected by 2050 in France.

"To consider cancer mortality from asbestos as a whole, an even greater number of deaths from bronchopulmonary cancer, also caused by past exposure to asbestos, must be added," adds the Press release.

Asbestos is the only known risk factor for pleural mesothelioma. Between asbestos exposure and the onset of cancer of the pleura, it can take between 30 and 45 years. Mesothelioma has been on the list of diseases that have been reported as mandatory since January 18, 2012.
