Vaccine against papillomavirus: for boys too!

This new recommendation comes from the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which has been recommending vaccination of young girls against these same viruses since 2006.

U.S. experts hope that vaccination of prepubescent boys, combined with that of girls in the same age group, will significantly reduce the infection rate among the U.S. population.

About half of sexually active adults will contract a papillomavirus at some point in their lives - of which there are about 100 varieties. Most are eliminated by the body, but some strains are resistant and can ultimately cause cervical, oral and cancers.

According to the CDC, in 2010, 20% of American women aged 19 to 27 were vaccinated against HPV, slightly more than the previous year's 17.6%.

Some voices have recently been raised in the American public to criticize the authorities' recommendation to administer the vaccine to girls as young as 11 years of age. They feel that this encourages them to adopt light mores.
