Lung cancer more deadly than breast cancer in European women in 2016

According to projections by the researchers, just over 1,359,000 cancer-related deaths from direct causes are expected to occur in 2015 in the European Union. About 766,000 will affect men, and 592,900 women.

According to the researchers, pancreatic cancer is associated with "a negative outlook for both sexes", with an increase of 4% in men and 5% in women between 2009 and 2015.

Among men, deaths from the three main cancers (lung, colorectal and prostate cancer) will have decreased by 9%, 5% and 12% respectively in six years.

In women, deaths associated with breast and colorectal cancers will also have decreased significantly in six years (by 10% and 8%). But lung cancer cases will have increased by 9% at the same time.

The estimated total number of deaths among Europeanwomen for 2015 is 90,800 for breast cancer and 87,500 for lung cancer (with a margin of error of around 2,000 deaths in both cases). In all likelihood, lung cancer will predominate among European women in 2016.

It should be noted that these raw figures mask an important regional diversity. The countries where women will die the most from lung cancer are the United Kingdom and Poland, with mortality almost three times higher than in Spain.
