Egg freezing: a hope to put into perspective...

Much has been said about the opening of LDC to all women, a flagship measure of the bioethics law, and the authorization to freeze eggs for all women has gone somewhat unnoticed.

Freezing eggs, or self-preservation of gametes, or ovocytary vitrification, is the taking and retaining of eggs, that is, what will evolve into an egg, for a future pregnancy. Thanks to a technique that is now very effective, the eggs are frozen over time.

For medical reasons. For example, in cases of illness such as endometriosis, or in cases of treatment that can impair fertility, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy to treat cancer.
In the case of egg donation. Donors can keep part of their frozen eggs for themselves, under certain conditions.
What is in the bill passed by the National Assembly?
The bill that has been passed provides that all women will be able to keep their eggs if they wish, but in a very controlled way.

Like what:

Written consent will be required each year to continue conservation.
Only licensed health facilities will be able to collect, collect and conserve gametes.
Age limits, minimum and maximum, will be the subject of a decree.
The issue of reimbursement is still under discussion but the employer will not be able to take charge of the conservation. In 2014, Us companies Facebook, Google and Apple made headlines by announcing that they would fund the freezing of their employees' eggs. On the cover of Bloomberg Businessweek, it read: "Freeze your eggs, free your career."

In France, this announcement had been strongly criticized. With the idea that it would push employees to delay motherhood in order to prioritize their careers and work more. It was seen as an interference of the professional environment in personal life.

Self-preservation of eggs for all, good news?
This is very good news for women because it responds to a societal evolution. In France, the average age of first pregnancy is 28.5 years in 2015, compared to 24 years in 1974.

For a whole bunch of reasons:

The length of the studies is longer so we enter later in the working life.
Women have a professional life, a career.
They want financial stability.
There is more and more second union, which is often accompanied by a desire for a child, at an age that can be advanced.
Celibacy is also a cause.
Sometimes we are in a relationship but the desire for a child does not happen at the same time in the couple.
All of this means that women have children later. It is known fertility decreases with age, it decreases significantly after 35 years and considerably after 38-40 years. It's the famous biological clock.
